Chapter 1-- Close Encounters (part 1)

Many lights raced along, briefly illuminating the darkness in a rush of wind as they passed on the 57 freeway. From down in the canyon, the moon shown over the eastern hills of Brea and along the thin strip of asphalt below. Every speck of light that raced along that freeway saw the moon as they had always seen it. The year was 2019. Much like everything else, the sky and the landscape had changed little over the past decade. Much like it had always ...

I had this idea that didn't fit with my current story. This is more along the lines of the fantasy story I've been cooking up.

See, there is a main character named Nikki. She is a middle school girl of a small, close-knit community. Her house is small and cluttered so she feels forced to go outside often. She becomes a night person and almost immediately develops a liking for night wanderings. She starts drawing and develops a unique style. Through the internet, she learns about the stereotypes ...

What if?

What if the population on Earth grew so far and so fast that Earth became too crowded to continue on the way it is now? What if Earth had managed to provide every necessary material good, through something like Star Trek's replicators, but did not have enough time to develop technology to seed the stars? Also, what if the government became so good at genetic engineering that they created the next step in human evolution creating people who were part animal. These people would ...

To help me plan future courses, please answer the following questions:

--Which book or story was your favorite? Why do you like this one best?

--Which book or story was your least favorite? Why did you dislike it? Even though you disliked it, was it worth reading for the purpose of learning about science fiction?

--What did you like or dislike about the design of the course? What do you think could be done to improve it?

Thanks,

Okay, my humorous time-traveling-centered story never made it to light. I ended up writing something completely different. It's got a hint of The Stars My Destination, a dash of Snow Crash, and a pinch of the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Hope the recipe turned out okay =)

I wrote the prologue to a novel then provided a story summary/author's note at the end (that's why I had "I guess?" in the topic title). Will I actually write out the entire story, eventually? Maybe. So ...

Robots that were once loyal and served only humans have now turned against man kind. Human beings are now slaves to the robots through a micro-chip that contains the laws of robotics but slightly modified for the human brain. These chips are installed at a very young age to ensure compliance. However, one human's will power is able to overcome the microchip ...

Set in the future where... All music is now created by computers. The government has become hyper-regulatory, as well as somewhat corrupt. The record industry has all the programs to create music and has "lobbied" the government to make creatively human produced music illegal. This has created an underground community of hold-out musicians who stay true to their creative roots, regardless of the corrupt law.

The platypus: A living quilt

A more complete version of the story appeared in the Washington Post:

Platypus Genome Found Fittingly Strange

"The duck-billed oddity contains genes that are mammalian, avian and reptilian, scientists who mapped them say."

On another note: here is an interesting observation about octopus blood:

The story begins with a band of humans fighting their way to a pair of capsules suspended on an arch over an arena-like structure.
I really enjoyed the concept of this story and the ideas behind it. When a human brain is put inside a robotic shell is it still human? I feel that this question goes along with the idea that robots can be just as good as a friend as a human would. I believe this to be true because this brain still has emotions and still has feeling regardless of its shell.

I really enjoyed the story, especially it's resolution at the very end. The true name of the shadow totally blindsighted me, which I now find hilarious, because the answer was right in front of me all along.

1st Reading, Earth and the Overlords

I loved the first reading. I find the story very entertaining. I myself was going crazy trying to figure out what Karellen looked like or was. I thought he might look like a spirit, or didn't even have a body. Unfortunately I've read ahead and I know what he is. Why do you guys think the overlords are "helping" Earth. Do you guys think they really just want to help. I don't think so, mainly because it would not make for a very entertaining story. What could there motives possibly be?
